“Render Unto Caesar”
Christians too often substitute slogans and bumper-stickers for close rigorous thinking.
When I suggest that no human being has a right to be an archist, nobody has a right to hurt people or take their stuff, and therefore nobody has a right to call themselves "the government" and levy taxes on people, I'm often told "But Jesus said 'Render unto Caesar.'" And that slogan is supposed to end the debate. Case closed.
A little thinking shows this verse does not refute the verse in which Jesus forbids His followers from being archists (Mark 10:42-45). When Jesus told His followers to pay taxes, even if unlawfully levied, He's giving a concrete example of what it means to be a pacifist.
- Jesus said "Resist not evil" (Matthew 5:39). That does not mean that "evil" is no longer evil.
- Jesus said "Turn the other cheek" (Matthew 5:39). That does not mean that anyone has the right to go around slapping people (or committing any other form of the crime of battery).
- Jesus said "Go a second mile (Matthew 5:41). That meant that when a pagan army invades your country and enslaves you as a backpack-carrier for one mile, don't get your musket out and declare a War for Independence," but go a mile and then go another mile. That's pacifism times two. But it certainly doesn't justify a pagan army to invade your country and put the population under tribute (taxation and forced labor).
- In the same way, when Jesus said "Render unto Caesar," he's ruling out armed revolution against "the powers that be." But in no way is Jesus saying that it was perfectly OK for Rome to violate the national sovereignty of Israel by a military invasion which slaughtered thousands of Israelites, setting up an undemocratic military dictatorship over Israel, and plundering the people of Israel with a burdensome tax which goes into the coffers of a foreign nation. Jesus is just saying "Be a pacifist."
Jesus is not saying an invader, conqueror, or plunderer has God's divine seal of approval. "Thou shalt be an anarchist" is still the binding commandment of God.
Archists must repent. Archists must "go out of business." Just like the Mafia must go out of business..
